Canada Life appoints Peter Maddern as MD for retirement business

Canada Life UK has announced the appointment of Peter Maddern as Managing Director of its retirement business.

Mr Maddern will join Canada Life's executive committee and report directly to Chief Executive Lindsey Rix-Broom. He takes over from Tom Evans, who is leaving the company to pursue a new opportunity. The appointment takes effect mid-February, subject to regulatory approval.

Tom Evans, who stepped into the role in May 2023, has been instrumental in shaping Canada Life’s retirement business. His leadership saw the integration of the individual annuity and home-finance propositions following the acquisition of Retirement Advantage in 2018.

Peter Maddern, a Canada Life veteran with 18 years at the company, brings extensive experience to the role. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Capital Management, the parent company. He also led the strategy for bulk purchase annuities (BPAs) and played a key role in developing Canada Life’s wealth-management offering during his six years on the leadership team.

Writing on LinkedIn, he said: “I am thrilled to share the news that I will be returning to the Canada Life UK business in February to take on the role of Managing Director of Retirement. It has been a real pleasure heading up Canada Life’s Capital Management team, however I’m hugely looking forward to leading the Retirement business at such an important time in the development of the Annuity and Equity Release markets.”

Chief executive Lindsey Rix-Broom praised Maddern, describing him as “an exceptional leader with deep knowledge of both the retirement market and Canada Life.”
