Celebrating Jake Jarman’s SEVEN Commonwealth and European medals

Jake Jarman, a rising star of British gymnastics, won gold medals in the team, all-round, floor and vault events at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Just a couple of weeks later at the European Championships in Munich, he won gold in the team and vault events, and a bronze in the floor competition.

His staggering achievement in Birmingham was the first time that an English gymnast has won four gold medals at a Commonwealth Games, or indeed any major international competition.

The achievement is even more impressive when you consider that Jake is still only 20 years old, and that this was his first senior international competition. He went to the Tokyo Olympics last year as a reserve but didn’t get a chance to compete.

Highlights of Jake’s performances included an amazing double-twisting double straight somersault and triple-twisting double tucked somersault in his floor routine. The routine had the highest difficulty rating of all the competitors.

Jake was also the only gymnast to attempt a vault with a 6.0 degree of difficulty. The second of his two vaults was known as a Yonekura and included three and a half twists. Experts consider it one of the most difficult vaults in the world.

His exploits received praise from across the sporting world and the media, with glowing reports from ITV, the BBC, the Guardian and the Daily Mail.

Success on the European stage

Proving that he could hold his nerve on an even bigger stage, Jake went on to contribute to the most successful European championships ever for a British gymnastics team.

First, he played his part in Great Britain being crowned European champions in the men’s team event. Jake was last to compete, performing a flawless high bar routine to secure the title for the team, which comprised Jake, Joe Fraser, James Hall, Courtney Tulloch and Giarnni Regini-Moran.

Two days later, Jake took the vault gold medal and floor bronze medal. Winning the vault title was especially impressive as Jake was a last-minute replacement for teammate Giarnni Regini-Moran in the final. After limited practice time, Jake brilliantly performed two vaults with high difficulty ratings to take the title.

Speaking to British Gymnastics, Jake said: ”This summer has just been the craziest few months of my life. I can’t quite wrap my head around it. I’m so grateful to my coaches and everyone behind the scenes who’s been there for me.”

Jake trains at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club, which also played a crucial role in the development of Louis Smith, double Olympic silver medallist. The club has benefitted from Retirement Line sponsorship and Jake continues to train there most days.
